Preparation for the Logia contest

Mazowieckie voivodeship primary school, grades 5–8 Official site ↗

Logia is considerably easier than OIJ — though it moves closer to it every year. It is a good contest to start with, but it stopped being easy a long time ago.

The topics it covers are very close to the strictly algorithmic side of OIJ. A student who works through Logia properly has a real piece of olympiad material behind them.

I put the most weight on the final, because that is where the stakes are: only the 25 best students in the whole voivodeship earn free admission to secondary school. Year after year, some of them are mine.

Logia is also a much more enjoyable contest. Drawing and ciphers pull in students who are not yet sure whether computer science is for them.

Even so, succeeding in it takes a lot of work and determination. An enjoyable contest is not the same thing as an easy one.

The route

Each row is a step, in order. Where a row is marked “or”, those are alternatives — pick one. Everything else in a row you do.

⬢ How the lessons run

Explain, demonstrate, then you solve.

I explain the topic and work a few examples through with you. Then the real work: a set of problems, chosen for where you actually are, and I read every solution you send. Approved, sent back with notes, or worked through together — nothing is marked by a machine.
